DISTRICT SPOTLIGHT:

BURGIN INDEPENDENT

Building a Culture of Kindness Through Connection
Burgin Independent School is proving that a small district can make a big difference. Through intentional relationship-building and innovative programs like Family Day, Burgin is shaping a generation of confident, compassionate, and connected learners.

Burgin Family Day: Building a Culture of Kindness

At Burgin Independent School, learning extends far beyond academics—it’s about nurturing empathy, leadership, and belonging. Each month, students from preschool through 12th grade come together for Burgin Family Day, an all-school initiative that pairs younger and older students in cross-grade “families.” Through hands-on projects, mentorship, and theme-based activities centered on values like kindness, respect, and teamwork, students learn to lead with compassion and confidence.

Family Day has quickly become a defining tradition of the district, transforming school culture and strengthening relationships across grade levels. Older students serve as role models, younger students gain a sense of inclusion, and teachers witness a stronger sense of unity throughout the school. The result is a learning environment that mirrors Burgin’s guiding belief—that every student deserves to feel known, valued, and empowered to make a difference.

Backed by community partnerships and supported by district leadership, Family Day has improved engagement, reduced behavioral referrals, and deepened the sense of connection that defines the Burgin experience. It’s proof that when schools focus on relationships, they unlock the full potential of every learner.

Unlocking Opportunities for Every Student

At Burgin Independent, every student has a place and a purpose. Family Day is a monthly, schoolwide initiative that brings together students from preschool through high school to build relationships, foster empathy, and strengthen leadership. Each month focuses on a theme such as kindness, teamwork, or respect, helping students put these values into action through hands-on activities and mentorship. Older students serve as role models, guiding younger peers and reinforcing a culture where every learner feels seen, supported, and valued. This intentional focus on connection prepares Burgin students not only for academic success but also for meaningful citizenship beyond the classroom.

Measurable Growth, Meaningful Change

The results of Family Day are clear and powerful. Since its implementation, 100% of students participate monthly, and the district has seen notable improvements in both engagement and behavior. Teachers report fewer office referrals, stronger classroom morale, and more positive peer interactions. Academically, Burgin continues to outperform state averages in reading, math, and ACT benchmarks, demonstrating that strong relationships drive strong results. This year, increased SEEK funding is also allowing Burgin to hire a full-time School Resource Officer, enhancing the district’s longstanding commitment to student safety and wellbeing.

Stronger Together: Partnerships Powering Success

Burgin’s success is rooted in its people. Students, educators, families, and community partners work hand in hand to sustain the school’s close-knit culture. Local businesses and organizations contribute resources that enrich Family Day activities, while parents and guardians actively participate in creating a welcoming, supportive environment. Superintendent Chris LeMonds emphasizes that “the Burgin way” is built on collaboration—where everyone shares responsibility for helping students thrive. This spirit of unity has become a cornerstone of Burgin’s identity and a model for other small districts across Kentucky.

The Road Ahead: What’s Coming Next

Burgin Independent is planning to expand Family Day even further by weaving academic themes into monthly events and inviting more community and parent engagement. The district aims to strengthen its mentorship model, ensuring that every student experiences the benefits of belonging and leadership. With continued legislative support and community investment, Burgin is poised to deepen its impact and continue shaping a school culture where kindness and connection lead the way.

Shining a Light on Student Success

Burgin students are the heart of this story. From high school mentors guiding elementary learners to younger students embracing teamwork and empathy, the culture of kindness is tangible across every classroom. A 10th grader shared, “I like Family Day because I get to spend time with younger kids and help them feel welcome,” while a 2nd grader added, “The older students make me feel special because they spend time with me.” These everyday moments of care, leadership, and respect are shaping students who are ready to succeed—academically, socially, and emotionally.
